The essay tells the historical and personal stories of a family, the Savoy family, from the year 1789, when the portraits were completed. That was the first annus horribilis of twenty years of suffering due to the war with Revolutionary France, until the Peace of Paris, which was followed by the family's retreat to Sardinia, the last free land of the Kingdom, to reach the Restoration and, even further, the Unification of Italy, an unexpected and almost impossible to imagine goal.
